1284 Communications is one of just 23 PR and marketing agencies in the UK to so far achieve the Fair Payment Gold standard for ethical treatment of suppliers.
This benchmark comes from the Government-backed Fair Payment Code, which replaced the voluntary Prompt Payment Code late last year.
The Fair Payment Code addresses gaps in the previous system by setting higher standards, supporting businesses in improving payment practices, and implementing a stronger compliance and enforcement approach.
Implemented last year, the code aims to reward businesses that treat their suppliers fairly and pay them promptly. It features three award categories, including a Gold Award that sets a 30-day payment standard, along with Silver and Bronze categories.
The Gold Award is the highest tier, requiring companies to pay at least 95% of invoices within 30 days, with 1284 achieving a typical payment period of less than 14 days across a three-year audit.
There are no fees associated with participation, and this scheme is one of 10 pillars underpinning the Good Business Charter - of which 1284 is also a member.
The Fair Payment Code’s robust framework makes it easier for businesses to identify trustworthy partners and avoid the costly delays that hurt small suppliers. By championing prompt payment, 1284 is helping to build a stronger, more collaborative supply chain throughout the UK.
George Oliver, Managing Director of 1284 Communications, said: “When we saw the Small Business Commissioner strengthening the national Fair Payment system, we applied immediately. We were among the first companies to be certified back in February.
“As a small business ourselves, prompt payment is something we are closely interested in and advocate for across our sector. Fair, efficient business is the right thing to do.”

Back in 2024, George Oliver asked the then Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP about the issue.
He asked Mr Reynolds whether a Labour Government would continue with measures for swifter payment of supplier SMEs by large companies pledged by the Conservative Government after lobbying from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
It came during a visit to Leicestershire for a round table hosted by then Loughborough parliamentary candidate, now Loughborough MP, Dr Jeevun Sandher.
