Michael Smith Switchgear

Michael Smith Switchgear is a multi award-winning manufacturer of low voltage switchgear assemblies.
Over the course of a decade of investment and innovation, it has progressed to carbon neutral manufacturing.

1284 began working with MSSL when it was named as a Government case study at COP26 in recognition of its work on tackling climate change as a small business.
Building on this, we delivered a targeted, sustainability-led communications strategy to position MSSL as an industry reference point for quality and low-carbon innovation.
Activity included advancing thought leadership, proactive media relations, and a structured stakeholder programme to reinforce credibility across political, trade, and public platforms.
Using established parliamentary contacts, a constituency visit by a senior MP was negotiated and arranged as recognition of MSSL's achievements.
Media visibility was enhanced by building relationships with influential industry editors and by strengthening ties with leading sector bodies through communications teams.
Internally, an employee newsletter was introduced, aligned to ISO-style communications discipline, to cascade strategy and celebrate sustainability milestones whilst tightening feedback loops between leadership, engineering, and commercial teams.
This ensured external messaging was consistently lived inside the organisation.
1284 also led the writing and submission of MSSL’s King’s Awards for Enterprise in Sustainable Development entry.
The Awards recognise outstanding achievement at a national level - positioning MSSL’s sustainability and innovation to the standard expected of the UK’s most prestigious business awards.
