5 things to ask yourself before commissioning a PR campaign

PR works best when the basic foundations are clear. It’s tempting to chase coverage before you’ve defined what success looks like and who it’s for. Before deciding whether to bring in external support, be clear on what exactly it is you need and ask yourself these five questions.
- What is the outcome we want?
Be honest about what you are trying to achieve. Is it to increase profile, change behaviour, or repair reputation? Or do you want stakeholder reassurance, or support for a funding bid or recruitment campaign? It can be easier to think about your current success and struggles when narrowing this down. Condense this to two or three outcomes for a specific campaign, recognising what success would look like for the business. If one campaign is trying to hit across all areas, it won't end up hitting any.
- Who are we targeting?
Be specific about who needs to hear the story. With B2B and G2B campaigns you’re rarely talking to everyone. It's the industry decision makers, partners, investors, and funders that the audience trusts. Being clear about that helps shape content and narrative to reach the right people through tailored channels. If your message isn’t being seen by those who matter, PR won’t add value.
- What is our story?
This might seem self explanatory, but does your story have the evidence to back it up, and what makes it different? As a chartered PR consultancy we want to see the passion and hear about the new projects to understand the impact, but we always look for proof behind the narrative. Case studies, impact data, external partnerships and lived experience all help your story resonate and feel human.
- Are our basics ready?
Before starting a campaign it helps to be clear on the basics. Who will be the face of your story, and how comfortable and knowledgeable are they when talking about your brand? What assets already exist? This could include website copy, brochures, reports, and slide decks - all of which need to reflect your brand. As trained journalists and chartered PR practitioners, we regularly help clients sharpen these foundations.
- How do we maintain success?
A strategic campaign refreshes your messaging and gives you a strong launch, but what happens next? It’s important that someone owns the story internally - making sure content is updated and aligned. If the message quickly reverts, audiences will notice and trust diminishes.
