  • Sustainability initiatives include management of ancient Leicestershire woodland

[LEICESTER, 06-11-25] Michael Smith Switchgear (MSSL) has now cut carbon emissions by more than 60% in just seven years.

Verified calculations for MSSL’s 2024 emissions show a drop of 4.67% compared with 2023. In total, consistent progress in sustainability has reduced the company’s emissions by 60.3% since 2018.

The new data comes after MSSL this year received the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development - one of only 27 UK businesses recognised in the category in 2025. MSSL is now 6 years ahead of the Make UK Net Zero roadmap, demonstrating that rapid decarbonisation is achievable for companies which take focused action.

Sean Smith, Managing Director, said:

“Many companies want to move towards Net Zero but are unsure where to start. Our experience shows that taking practical, consistent steps lead to noticeable reductions over time.

“By embedding sustainability into everyday decisions we are cutting emissions, strengthening our business, and helping protect the planet for future generations.”

Carbon reductions have been delivered by resource efficiency, product innovation, and sustainable management. They are measured per both £1m turnover and FTE.

As part of its environmental strategy, MSSL maintains 17.2 acres of ancient woodland in Leicestershire. This supports biodiversity and demonstrates effective management of local woodland resources.

Action on sustainability is underpinned by rigorous environmental management (through ISO14001) and focus on workplace health and safety (ISO45001) certifications.

Emily Smith, Operations and Finance Director, said:

“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond compliance, it’s integral to how we operate each day.

“By continually improving our processes and standards, we’re making meaningful progress towards a lasting, positive impact for our people and our environment.”

MSSL designs and manufactures low voltage switchgear and control panels delivering low voltage switchboards tailored to industry-leading standards and British regulations.

The company’s latest step towards manufacturing Net Zero comes as it marks its 40th anniversary and receives the King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.
