1284 to sponsor Quorn FC for 2022/23 season
Updated: Jul 25
1284 will sponsor Quorn FC again this season - and the club has a story we don’t get tired of hearing.
Quorn FC was founded in 1924 and spent the post-war years moving up and down the divisions.
In 2003 it became the only club at its level to sell a player to a Football League club. Luke Varney moved to Crewe Alexandra for £50,000 - but that wasn’t the end of the story.
Four years later, Quorn received a £500,000 sell-on payment linked to the transfer when Varney moved on to Charlton Athletic for £2m.
The money paid for ground improvements used by the club and its community today - and the cutting from the Mercury article about the deal remains in a frame on the clubhouse wall. There's more on the deal here.
Quorn had a tough beak with Covid - they were top of the United Counties league and looking set for promotion when the playing season was ended early in March 2020.
They aim to rectify that in 2022/23 - and also have plans emerging to further use football for the benefit of the village and build links with business and the wider community.
Quorn’s facilities provide more than 700 people a week with the opportunity to participate in sport and leisure activities.
Oh, and Dion Dublin once played for the club!
Season starts on Saturday away at Boston Town. Full season fixtures here.
